About the role and team

We are seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to deliver work in our Property Housing Team, within our property department. This role is focused on the matter management in the post completion phase and dealing with Land Registry Requisitions. This role can be based in either our Birmingham or Manchester office. This team works on a combination of home ownership and development transactions and acting for Housing Associations in respect of a variety of routine work connected with the stock of residential properties owned by them including:

  • Asset management including disposals and acquisitions of freehold and leasehold residential properties (including at auction)
  • Deeds of easements
  • Section 38/104 and wayleave agreements;
  • Commercial leases
  • Land sales
  • Lease extensions
  • Lease renewals
  • Releases of restrictive and other covenants
  • Older persons shared ownership
  • Collective enfranchisement
  • Staircasing
  • Re-mortgages
  • Transfers of equity
  • General residential portfolio transactions – eg reviewing leases and titles for multiple properties

Supporting a number of fee earners in the team, this role will involve preparation and submission of applications to Land Registry  either directly or via infotrack, dealing with any requisitions (which may including liaising with the client, our internal team and/ or the other side with supervision), preparing and submitting SDLT returns and keeping accurate records on our internal logs of both the LR applications and SDLT returns.

Assisting with completions may also be required as part of the role , including the preparation of engrossments, arranging pre-completion searches, preparing cheque and telegraphic transfer requisitions, arranging for funds to be remitted as instructed, diarising key dates ( priority period expiry, SDLT submission deadlines) and scanning and photocopying as required. There may also be a requirement to support the team with other admin tasks on an ad-hoc basis, including sending completed deeds to the deeds store, updating clients, closing files and clearing balances, and liaising with team as needed, particularly where they may be dealing with sales ahead of registrations being completed.   

About the candidate
 

The role is suited to someone who enjoys a variety of property work, has a good understanding of the principles of property law and can apply those principles in a pragmatic way for the benefit of our clients. 

Working to tight timescales and volume work the role will involve managing a caseload of property transactions in the post completion phase and dealing with Land Registry matters until registration is complete.

  • Be confident and proactive
  • Have exceptional organisational skills
  • Property experience would be preferred for this role 
  • Experience of managing a team would be ideal but not essential
  • Be committed to providing high quality service to our clients as well as being a strong team player
  • Have a ‘can-do’ proactive attitude.
