About the role and team

Our Legal 500 rated Projects team is seeking to expand and we are currently looking to recruit a Construction Projects Lawyer. The ideal candidate will have 3+ yrs PQE, and relevant experience to assist the team in delivering a broad range of advice relating to construction matters across our sectors, including for housing, local government, social business and charity clients. It would also be an advantage for the successful candidate to have some public procurement experience but this is not essential. If you have good experience of advising on, drafting and negotiating contracts for construction projects and are ready to apply your skills to the sectors we work in, we would love to hear from you.

We are fortunate to have a broad range and large number of instructions both short term and for longer term projects which will require additional long-term resource. Please look over our website to get a feel for our core sectors (including Social Housing, Local Government, Charities, Education & Care) and for information about our exciting B Corp accreditation.

Many of the sectors we work in are heavily regulated and therefore involve addressing how ‘standard’ construction contracts interact with our clients’ many and ever evolving regulatory obligations.  Producing high quality and consistent drafting is a big part of the role.

The sectors we work in often also involve overlap between construction and procurement law.  This role offers a unique opportunity to become skilled in procurement law, if desired. If not, you will be fully supported by our wider project teams as necessary.  In addition, many of our teams are involved in waste and energy projects and there is plenty of opportunity in these areas, again: if of interest.

We often act for social housing, care sector or charities clients (often on JCT terms) or act on NEC-based contracts for the large volume of highway and engineering projects undertaken by our local authority clients.  We recently completed the largest ever procurement exercise in social housing history: advising on all procurement and construction matters for long-term (15 year) repair & improvement work partnerships, based on PPC terms.

About the candidate

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of construction work and also an interest to work within our specialist sectors. The candidate will mainly focus on non-contentious work but there shall be opportunities to support across the team in an advisory capacity, as and when the need arises.

We would like to recruit a team member at Associate level or above, so that you are able to progress matters independently where appropriate and also help with supervising our wonderful team of junior lawyers.  This is a role you really can make your own and which offers excellent prospects for career progression.

For much of our work we are acting for the client under a construction / engineering contract. Whilst many of our clients are experienced purchasers of construction work, equally many request back-to-basics training or general support regarding the contracting and negotiation processes. It would be helpful if applicants were keen to assist with this work and enjoy explaining complex technical issues in a way that is accessible to non-construction professionals.

Genuine flexibility can be offered regarding working hours and location. We would very much welcome applications from returners to work and are able to consider applications from people who may wish to work primarily remotely and / or part time or to job share. Yes: you can break to do the school run if that applies to you (a question far too many applicants fear to ask, in our view).

Our teams really are known for being happy to do things differently: you'll be joining a genuinely friendly and non-hierarchical team which wants people to be able to be themselves and to thrive in a supportive environment. Our priority is to support you in having a successful and rewarding career which genuinely plays to your strengths while supporting our clients on truly varied and worthwhile matters.  Our team pride themselves on using their legal knowledge to further our social purpose goals and those of our clients, whether for the day-to-day contracts they procure and administer or for a ‘once in a decade’ major procurement. Please get in touch if you think you would like to be a part of it.
